Background
Photography of figure is traditionally marked by lighting to increase contrast, distorting focal lengths to abstract the body, and oils to increase the surface shine of the skin and provide an extra layer of dimension.
Overview
With the pastel project, I'm organizing a group of models to be painted in a matte, visually flat manner to create figures reminiscent of the great marble statues of sculptors like Michelangelo and Auguste Rodin. Body paint and a textured substrate like flour / fine sand will be used to make the body elicit a feeling of stone, contrasted by an organic feeling of softness.
Colors
Visual inspiration will draw from subtle, flat, desaturated pastels similar to sidewalk chalk's matte finish. Colors side by side on the figure of the body will resemble crayons in a box / rainbow across the breadth of the image.
